Simone Forti, Vleeshal
Vleeshal is pleased to present ‘Here It Comes’, a solo exhibition with artist, choreographer, dancer, and writer Simone Forti.
Simone Forti came to prominence in the 1960s, in a historical moment of rich dialogue between visual artists, musicians, poets and dancers. Her work has made a major contribution to the intersection of sculpture and performance and helped to create a sensibility for “what we know about things through our bodies.” Although regarded as one of the key figures in postmodern dance, she refers to herself as a “movement artist.” In the spring of 1961, she presented ‘Five Dance Constructions And Some Other Things’ as part of a series organised by composer La Monte Young at Yoko Ono’s studio in New York; radically new dances made up of every day movements, performed in interaction with sculptures.
At Vleeshal Markt this legendary series of ‘Dance Constructions’ will be activated by “movers” from
the opening till March 28, after which the space will be temporarily closed to make room for Simone Forti and Charlemagne Palestine. As longtime collaborators, they will develop a new version of ‘Illuminations’ for Vleeshal Markt, to be performed on April 2 and April 3.
The exhibition at Vleeshal Zusterstraat presents a selection of Forti’s works from different periods and areas, with drawings, photographs, videos, and documentation of performances – including material from Forti’s first time in Middelburg in 1980, where she performed her piece ‘Crawling’ during interdisciplinary arts festival Forum, that Maria-Rosa and Marinus Boezem organised in Middelburg from 1977 to 1987.
The opening of ‘Here It Comes’ will start at 5pm at Vleeshal Zusterstraat, and continue with an evening of performances of ‘Dance Constructions’ at Vleeshal Markt.
